Call for Proposals: AsiaTEFL 2027 International Conference

The 25th AsiaTEFL International Conference — AsiaTEFL 2027 — will take place from 2 to 4 July 2027 at Sunway University in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The organisers have indicated that the conference dates are tentative.

The AsiaTEFL International Conference is a major international academic event in the fields of English language teaching, linguistics, and applied linguistics. It brings together teachers, university lecturers, researchers, teacher educators, representatives of educational organisations, policymakers, and graduate students from across Asia and beyond.

Conference Theme

Humanising ELT: Community, Agency and Meaningful Learning

The conference focuses on preserving the human dimension of education amid the rapid development of digital technologies and artificial intelligence. Participants will explore how English language teaching can support learning communities, strengthen teacher and learner agency, increase motivation, and create meaningful learning experiences.

Main Conference Strands

The conference will cover the following areas:

  • educational technology, AI, and digital futures in English language teaching;
  • teacher and learner identity and agency;
  • pre-service and in-service professional development;
  • wellbeing, motivation, and humanistic education;
  • inclusion, equity, and community engagement;
  • critical pedagogies and language policy;
  • pedagogy, curriculum, and materials development;
  • innovation in teaching and assessment;
  • linguistics and applied linguistics;
  • multilingualism, discourse analysis, corpus linguistics, and language acquisition.

Who Can Submit a Proposal?

The organisers invite proposals from:

  • English language teachers and university lecturers;
  • researchers;
  • teacher educators, trainers, and methodologists;
  • master’s and doctoral students;
  • representatives of educational organisations;
  • education policymakers.

Participants may present the results of academic or classroom-based research, Action Research, innovative teaching practices, educational projects, original teaching approaches, practical tools for teachers, or other developments in ELT.

Presentation Formats

The following presentation formats are available:

  • paper presentation — 20 minutes, in person or online;
  • workshop — 60 minutes, in person;
  • symposium — 60 minutes, in person;
  • poster presentation — in person.

An individual proposal must include:

  • a presentation title of no more than 25 words;
  • an abstract of 200–250 words;
  • a brief biography of approximately 50 words for each presenter.

All proposals will undergo peer review by the Conference Academic Committee. They will be evaluated according to their relevance to the conference theme, originality and significance, scholarly or professional quality, practical value, and potential impact on English language teaching, learning, assessment, or research.

Submission Deadline

The deadline for proposal submissions is 31 December 2026.

Proposals must be submitted in English through the Oxford Abstracts platform. No payment is required at the proposal submission stage. If a proposal is accepted, the presenter must complete conference registration and pay the applicable registration fee.
